Symphonies Nos. 79 - Gustav Mahler CD

Product Description The final box set of six discs in Signums series of Mahlers Symphonies, performed live by Lorin Maazel and the Philharmonia: Sometimes called Song of the Night, Mahlers Seventh Symphony is a journey from night to day. An opening movement inspired by an evening boat ride on an alpine lake, two Nachtmusik movements and a ghostly scherzo give the work its nocturnal quality before sunlight emerges in its jubilant finale. Mahlers mightiest symphony, often known as The Symphony of a Thousand calls for huge orchestral forces, eight soloists, a boys chorus and large mixed chorus. Described by the composer as his gift to the whole nation it is an epic drama in two parts, the first a setting of a Medieval Latin hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, and the second a setting of the final scene of Goethes Faust. An intensely personal work heard as both the ultimate farewell and a final homecoming Leonard Bernstein said of Mahlers last completed work ""It is terrifying, and paralyzing, as the strands of sound disintegrate ... in ceasing, we lose it all. But in letting go, we have gained everything. Review "Maazel lets the music swell again and again, enlarging the universe portrayed by Goethe and Mahler and thus expanding the experience of the audience, until the final chorus is truly overwhelming in its impact. This is a remarkable performance that fully explores the emotional heights and depths of the symphony." --Infodad, September 10,2015Additional Info: Personnel: Megan Stickles (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, glockenspiel, tambourine); Dan Tews, Liam Betson (vocals, guitar, percussion); Kevin McMahon (vocals, guitar); Susan Putnins (vocals, piano); Eric Harm, Sarim Al-Rawi (vocals, percussion); Kevin Kearns, Sean Neafsey (vocals); Andrew Cedermark (guitar); Elio DeLuca (electric guitar, electric piano); Amy Klein (violin); David Bentley (cello); Ava Tews (clarinet); Elaine Labate, Eliane Labate (saxophone); Brian Nowakowski (trumpet); Ian Graetzer (bass guitar); Ian Dykstra (drums).
