As with the first album which Tong recorded, the choice of repertoire has evolved not only from his exploration of the composers sizeable body of piano works but also from a desire to select an attractive and varied combination of pieces representing all the main periods of Sibeliuss creative life from the early 1890s through to th emid-1920s. At the same time, he wanted to continue the natural process of combining large-scale works with shorter pieces (or sets of pieces) in a way which migh tmirror a concert programme. Therefore he has chosen one of Sibeliuss most important large-scale piano works, the Sonata in F major, Op. 12, as well as one of his best-loved orchestral transcriptions, Valse triste. He always admired the three strikingly original Sonatinas, Op. 67 and likewise the evocative Characteristic Impressions, Op. 103. The captivating Bagatelles, Op. 97 and by comparison, teh more serene Lyric Pieces, Op. 74 complete the selection for this album, confirming that Sibelius was also a masterful miniaturist.Additional Info: Neither as gruesome nor as amusing as John Herndon's play-on-the-title cover illustration implies, Sacrifices offers a pared-down twist on the layered complexity for which Guillermo Herren's productions are known. Curtailment might have been more descriptive, if less striking, as an album title. Enough space is left in these fluttering, fractured hip-hop constructions to let in several shafts of light, instead of the one or two Herren has typically allowed. Although the tracks are comparatively easy to absorb, they're hardly minimalist or strictly background material. Repeated plays expose numerous nuances, while highlights "Without Anyone," "Basinkitarian," and "The World Is Bigger" emit some of the producer's prettiest melodies. Vocal collaborations are also limited, only a solitary smudged and dazed ballad featuring left-of-center R&B artist James Tillman.
