Retta Young And The Devotions - RETTA YOUNG AND THE DEVOTIONS CD

Starting out in the late 1960s as a group called The Superbs, which was the sister group of the popular male group The Superlatives, Retta Young And The Devotions first recorded on Silver Dollar Records and then for famed producer Paul Kyser on Wanderik. Retta Young is the wife of Al Goodman of Moments fame, and later Ray, Goodman & Brown. Paul Kyser was the one who introduced Ray to Retta. On Rettas self titled album for Wanderik, presented here, Paul Kyser wrote, produced and arranged all the tracks. Originally released in 1977, the album contains many memorable moments including the infectious I Put A Spell On You and The Saga Of Willie Jones. The original LP has gone on to become a highly collectible album in rare groove circles. All selections have been newly remastered.Additional Info: Though the mid-1960s folk-pop group We Five broke up in 1967, their several subsequent reformations produced some intriguingly eclectic releases. This set of pop songs from the late 1960s includes a peppy cover of George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun," an oddly raunchy version of Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me," a bluesy take on Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," and, most authentically, their folky rendition of the Donovan title track, displaying both the band's versatility and its search for a meaningful musical direction.
