Factory Second - Neil Getz CD
Product Description In Factory Second, the debut album of singer/songwriter Neil Getz, songs unfold like a sequence of short plays. Getzs characters flee, fall, and die, wrestling for their dignity against a world that devalues them for their defects and sometimes for their strengths. Getz weaves his stories around them in their raw complexity, neither judging them nor whittling them to a point. Urban architecture and jungle instinct clash in Bad Case of Passion. In Factory Second the hard-boiled narrator, unexpectedly touched by the sound of a depreciated guitar, finds his life transformed as he is inspired to see past dehumanizing social labels. In Come On, Ely a road-weary motorcyclist muses at his history of relocation and his lack of attachments as he closes in on the Nevada town in search of rest on his cross-country ride. In Heart So Steady a compulsively abusive relationship endures through intrepid love. Jenny Lee dare not ask the questions that would relieve her of her torturous jealousy. In Nelly Blye, based on the early twentieth century ballad Frankie and Johnny a reserved young woman takes a first small step out of her staid life only to find herself immediately caught in a murderous love triangle. One can hear that the Florida born and raised Getz has logged time in both CBGB and the Everglades with wide miles in-between. In the Bronze Age martial dance "Oh, Delilah" he bends his Stratocaster like an intoxicated shaman. With its triangle and fiddle "Penny Candy" saws like a Cajun dance-hall tune, spiked with electric guitar and harmonica. Flock of Demons screeches, hums, scrapes and buzzes, each instrument a ravenous fiend tearing through the window-screens of a twilit Okeechobee kitchen. The expansive, unclassifiable Counting Trains, with Chris Carmichaels expressionistic cello, gives dignity to the inner battles of adolescent depression unheard in the songbook of teen angst. Getzs back is covered by the sure bow of Mr. Carmichael (Toby Keith, Steve Earle, Hank Williams III, Taylor Swift) whose soaring viola solo gives perfect emotional complement to the arc of Nelly Blye. Gawain Mathews (Ben Lee, Tony Furtado) crisp electric guitar amidst the sardonic humor of Not in Love, Just Falling bops with verve. Jeff Allens (Avril Lavigne, Duncan Sheik, Rosanne Cash) bass anchors, colors, and breaks the symmetry of the mostly folk and pop forms. Eric Gardner (Norah Jones, Wayne Kramer) shows uncommon range drumming and shaking his way through the wide stylistic variety of Getzs brand of Americana. The digital booklet, with lyrics, detailed credits and some surprising childhood pictures of Getz, is designed by John Yates (Alkaline Trio, Bad Religion, NoMeansNo). Review ... a storyteller par-excellence ... Neil Getz is a spectacularly good songwriter and uses words like talons to draw you in and keep you dangling ... --Alan Harrison, Maverick, June 2011, and No DepressionAn enjoyable, playful mix of folkie twang and power-pop, featuring half-rueful, half-novelty, quite clever lyrics, along with catchy, kooky melodies and a puckish sense of fun. --Joe Sixpack, SlipCue, March 2011Specifics
