Britten Young Persons Guide To Orch Variations - JARVI CINCINNATI SYM ORCH CD

Edward Elgar and Benjamin Britten hold a place at the helm of their respective generations of British composers in the twentieth-century. For Elgar, it was the success of the Enigma Variations that spread the awareness of his music to the international community, and Brittens first operatic project, Peter Grimes, signaled his establishment as the most important English opera composer of the century. These two decisive works are both deeply personal pieces drawn from life experience. Brittens boyhood in a seaside town and personal struggles later on are reflected in the story and setting of Grimes, and Elgars close circle of friends and loved ones form the inspiration for his set of variations on an original theme. Britten wrote the Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra in 1946 for an educational film called "The Instruments of the Orchestra," and designed the work for performance with or without narration.
