Beauty Will Come - Red June CD

Product Description Beauty Will Come was recorded and mixed in late 2011 at Hollow Reed Arts Studio in Asheville by musician/engineer extraordinaire Chris Rosser, who co-produced the record along with Red June. The innovative young graphic artist, Peter Gaillard, designed the album art using an old lithograph of a Mourning Cloak butterfly. The image resonates with the albums themes of transition, hope, loss and renewal. "Beauty Will Come is a brilliant integration of old-time, bluegrass, and beyond, and feels like a holding of hands... The blend is beautiful. Its world class music." says singer/songwriter Kari Sickenberger of Polecat Creek. More personal than their debut album, Beauty Will Come begins with an uplifting song by Straughan titled "These Old Chains." "Every Hard Mile", by Miller, is an expansive song featuring the bands signature three part harmonies. Track three is an exciting old-time inspired fiddle tune written by Weinstein & Miller titled "Piney Branch Breakdown." Straughan then brings us "All that the Fall Leaves," a playful waltz about the search for true love. "Bittersweet" is a pensive song from Weinstein, and is the song from which the album title was drawn. Next is the only cover song on the record, a gospel a capella originally recorded by Ralph Stanley called "Im Willing to Try." Following, is Johns nod to his bluegrass heritage with "Cloud of Dust." Straughans beautiful and powerful "Souls Repair" follows and Miller then brings us the light-hearted "Foolish Me." Next is a set of Irish reels, "Scotts/Connors" penned by Straughan and named after his young guitar student and students brother. The final track on the album "Red Sky of Morn" is a collaborative song written by all three band members along with Laurelyn Dossett. Renowned NC musician Riley Baugus of Cold Mountain fame sums it up-- Beauty Will Come is INCREDIBLE!!! I loved it. It is full of wonderful songwriting, beautiful vocals and remarkable instrument work. John, Natalya and Will really have it going on with this recording. Congratulations guys!!!! Super CD!!! Review Every time I listen to Red Junes last album, Remember Me Well, I think of my father. Dad wasnt that musical. Neither of my parents were. I laugh when I think of them in the car, Dad humming poorly and Momma whistling in the wrong key, both engrossed in the music of the moment, me sitting in the back seat with both hands over my ears or pointing out loudly that they were destroying an otherwise pleasant song. I picture them in the living room listening to Hank Williams on the record player or watching The Mormon Tabernacle Choir on TV, their faces lit up with the joy of the music. Maybe they couldnt play, sing or whistle, but there were few I have known over the years who had a greater love for music. Dad used to say that if they sang more and talked less, he would go to church, but of course they never did and he never did and since his death, the point is moot. It sticks with me to this day, though, because he was a hard drinking, two-fisted logger who cussed up a storm when things didnt suit him and who you wouldnt have thought would have been amenable to a church of any kind, just on principle. But how he loved those hymns! Especially those of the bluegrass vocal harmony persuasion. So when I heard Red Junes interpretation of Bob Flemmings Im Willing To Try, a song straight out of the Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver playbook, I knew their new Beauty Will Come album was special. Unfortunately, the song is an anomaly on the album. Fortunately, they pack the album with songs so well written and performed that it doesnt really matter. Red June plays a hybrid of folk, country and bluegrass in many of its attendant forms. They can kick it with a reel, squeeze a country turnip until it bleeds, and tell a folk tale as well as most anybody, but where they really shine is their songwriting. All three have an innate feel for the music of the past and, without rehashing the formulas of the past, write in their own styles, fitting each song to their strengths. The main strength? Vocals. Vocals are not all they do, but they do them so well that you get lost in them at times. Three voices, blended yet individual, singing for harmonic joy or sadness or singing for the joy of singing itself. Theyve actually gotten better at it. Oh, they were plenty good when they recorded Remember Me Well, but theyve gotten better. You can hear it. There are shades of Tim OBrien and Seldom Scene and Buck White & The Down Home Folks in the music, somehow. Not in the actual voices, but in the phrasing. It is a process, I think. They are processing well. Yep, Dad would be pleased. His last years were spent in front of the TV watching the Nashville Network and CMT before money pushed real music aside in favor of the pap Nashville started serving up. Real music like that of Red June. It may be country or folk or bluegrass or any combination of the three, but it is soul. To Dad, it was. Me, too. Job well done. --Frank Gutch Jr., Folk and Acoustic Music ExchangeFounded in Asheville, NC, the trio of Red June blends Bluegrass and Folk with a dash of Pop sounds, and does it very, very well. Will Straughan, John Cloyd Miller, and Natalya Weinstein possess a airtight harmony that will impress even the toughest critic. Listen to their vocal blend on I m Willing To Try, and you may need to have your jaw surgically removed from the floor they are that good! You can also say that for the astonishing sounds of Red Sky Of Morn. They are also just as good when taking their individual turns in the spotlight, however. These Old Chains, Every Hard Mile, and Bittersweet give each member a chance to show their solo stuff. On the latter, Weinstein sounds like a southern goddess, and her fiddle work is equally beautiful. Red June manages to merge so many different sounds, and they do so in what seems like an effortless manner. Bluegrass outlets would be wise to give this group some strong consideration, especially on cuts like Foolish Me or Cloud Of Dust. It may not be old-school Bluegrass, but still, this is something special, very special indeed! --Chuck Dauphin, Music News NashvilleBeauty Will Come by Red June just may be the most stunningly gorgeous country album in years. Everything about it: from the exquisite three-part harmonies and acoustic loveliness of the mandolin, fiddle, guitar and upright bass...to the compositional prowess extolling home and hearth, family and true love ways. It s natural, organic fresh air cool mountain stream music that strikes the right chord. It s music meant to be played on the back porch at sundown while the coffee s a brewin and the soup is heatin up. This is the epitome of Americana... --Mike Greenblatt, RantnRoll Aquarian Weekly
