Keyboard Percussion Publication The opening number of this CD, Arena, is from my percussion concerto of the same name, here arranged as a solo piece. In the orchestral version I have three separate percussion stations spread out over the stage, whereas in the solo piece I have only one of these. Johan Bridger, who performs on the recording, has, in the cadenza at the end of the piece, added an individual and free improvisation based on material from the orchestral version. Among other things, he produces a five-layered section of polyrhythm. Phantasmagoria is at present my only solo work for marimba-the only one I care to recognize, that is! Phantasmagoria is a constantly changing medley of real and imagined images, as in a dream. Patrick Raab performs the work with his characteristically unfettered attitude-let loose and it will come! I wrote 6&8 for my own percussion graduation concert and it is, of course, written in 6/8 time. It draws on inspiration I brought home with me from a trip to West Africa some years ago. Lennart Gruvstedt performs the work on snare drum, hi-hat and bass drum. 6&8 is followed by Twilight, a piece originally composed for two marimbas but performed here in a version for four. This piece focuses on basic ideas of color and chordal transformations: for example in the opening phrase, as chords are passed around from duo to duo in an attempt to produce sustained notes on marimba, almost as though it were a string orchestra. Nordic Peace, orchestrated for quartet has a "beaty" character and was inspired by, among other sources, a drum kit fill-in on George Bensons Thats Right, performed by the drummer Michael Bland. Simply put, it is a game of melodies in rhythm, accents and tonal colors. The trio Bridging the World is based on the Chaconne by J.S. Bach from the partita in d minor for solo violin. The Chaconne is a work with immense personal significance for me, which is why I took the liberty to borrow from it-my sincere thanks and apologies to Bach! I also wrote Faces for my graduation concert. The work is comprised of seven short character pieces for solo marimba/vibraphone, four percussionists and piano. The solo line is not soloistic in a traditional sense but takes a non-hierarchal stance in the whole. The piece has a temporally symmetrical shape and thematically based construction between the outer movements, with the fourth movement as a free-standing central point. Tobias Brostrm The Ensemble Malm Percussion Edition grew from the Malm Percussion Ensemble, an ensemble formed by the late Bent Lylloff, professor in percussion at both the Royal Danish College of Music, Copenhagen and the Malm Academy of Music. The ensemble was formed in the 1970s and survived into the 1990s, during which time it toured extensively in Europe and USA, gave the premiere performances of many contemporary works, and made many critically acclaimed recordings. The common link with todays ensemble is Lennart Gruvstedt, one of the original members of the Malm Percussion Ensemble. The quintet Malm Percussion Edition has existed in its current form since 2003 and its current members - Lennart Gruvstedt, Johan Bridger, Patrick Raab, Bo Hkansson and Christoffer Grntz - have undertaken a number of acclaimed performances, tours and recordings for radio. The ensemble has also performed and participated at a number of percussion festivals. Tobias Brostrm - Arena is the groups first CD recording. Lennart Gruvstedt was born in Ystad, Sweden in 1955 and grew up surrounded by music in a family of percussionists. Following musical studies at the Malm Academy of Music with Professor Bent Lylloff and the legendary Ed Thigpen. He has performed with many of the finest musicians from all over the world, in many different settings - experiences that have helped shape his own unique musicianship. Lennart has been a member of Malm Percussion Ensemble; the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Copenhagen; and has held the Drum Chair in the Danish Radio Bigband from 1978-1990. He was also a member of Niels-Henning rsted Pedersens trio and Palle Mikkelborgs Entrance for many years. The list of musicians Lennart has collaborated with is an impressive one: Miles Davis, Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, Hermeto Pasqual, Van Morrison, Thoots Thielemanns, Eddie Harris, Nils Landgren, Hkan Hardenberger and many more. Lennart also teaches at the Malm Academy of Music where he has been head of Percussion since 1980. His fellow percussionists on this recording, including composer Tobias Brostrm, are all former students of his. Patrick Raab, born in 1977, is a chamber and orchestral percussionist in great demand in Scandinavia and Europe. Since his symphonic debut, at the age of 19 with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Patrick has frequently performed with orchestras such as the Swedish National Orchestra in Gothenburg, Malm Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Radio, Malm Opera Orchestra and Deutscher Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Patrick is also a member of Malleus Incus and regularly performs with Malm Percussion Edition. Since August 2001, Patrick has been principal percussionist with the Royal Opera House Orchestra, Copenhagen. Bo Hkanson, born in 1970, works as percussionist, timpanist and drummer in Sweden and Denmark. He studied at the Malm Academy of Music from 1989-1994 and was winner of the 1st prize in the International Percussion Competition, Luxembourg in both 1992 and 1999. In 2003 Bo performed as soloist in the Scandinavian premiere of Mark Anthony Turnages Double Percussion Concerto, and toured Sweden with the same work two years later. In November 2007 he will be featured soloist in the Scandinavian premiere of Heinz Karl Grubers Percussion Concerto with the Malm Symphony Orchestra. Johan Bridger was born in 1976. Following his debut with the Malm Symphony Orchestra in May 2004, Johan consolidated his breakthrough the same year by being awarded the 1st prizes in both the Swedish Soloist Prize and the Belgium International Marimba Duo Competition, recording a solo CD for Caprice Records, and finally making acclaimed debut performances at both the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in USA and the Wigmore Hall in London. His premiere performance of Brostrms Arena - Percussion Concerto No. 1 in Malm 2004 was highly acclaimed and he has subsequently performed this work with the Helsingborg, Gvle and Ume Symphony Orchestras in Sweden. Johan currently teaches the marimba at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, Denmark. Christoffer Grntz was born in Halmstad, Sweden in 1976. His interest in music began very early: by at the age of 3 he had started learning the piano and he went on to learn saxophone and finally his favorite - percussion. He studied with Lennart Gruvstedt at the Malm Academy of Music and has worked with many prestigious ensembles. Since 2Specifics
